Rolling pin for safety bar?

Hello All:

Has anyone ever came up with the idea of substituting the safety bar of a safety razor with a rolling pin, or a small rotating cylinder?

Best regards,

Pepe Peña

El Jefe vs Hawk

Hey guys I am looking to try out the SE side of things. I have always had good luck with Ikon razors so I found and purchased an El Jefe and an SE handle to go with it. After making the purchase I discovered the Hawk and upon reading it looks like the Hawk tends to be a more refined razor. That being said I typically prefer a more aggressive shave and a heavier razor. I'm now debating on purchasing a Hawk being that they are actually in stock (and only $25). Should I just get both and compare them or give the Ikon a try first? Thoughts? Thanks

New SE razors

Good evening folks. Some of you may know me from around the forums. I have been out of touch for several months. I must admit to my surprise seeing all the new SEs out there. I am very much a vintage type. The Gem Jr. Is a favorite and I love the micro maric even. So my question is what is the deal with the newer razors? What makes them tick? Is it easier to get modern blades? Or more appealing style maybe? I have used modern more expensive DE razors and see no reason to pay the extra price. A gillette old or single ring still give me the best shaves. Is the same true with new SE razors?

Teaching a new shaver

I posted this at theoriginalsafetytoo but wanted to get the opinions of shavers here also.

I am going to be teaching a young man how to shave soon. I want him to start on a SE of course. What are some thoughts on the best razor? I am thinking a featherweight or contour I or II.

Hey there I'm looking at buying a Schick, but the one I'm looking at (for the price) has a long handle. I like shorter handle razors and was wondering if anyone here has shorten a schick. Pictures would be great. Thanks

Well for those that don't know, I'm a research junkie. meaning Anything that peaks my interest I'll want to learn as much as I can. Last fall I started getting interested SE razors and I looked over Gems and Ever Readys as well as Schick injectors. Once again around two weeks ago, I looked into SE razors, this time more in the line of injectors and I read a lot more reviews. I finally decided on this one I found in decent shape for a reasonable price.

The Demise of GEM Razors

What Happened??

According to my reading, throughout the first half of the 20th century, two different species, double edged safety razors and single edged GEM razors, co-existed peacefully.  According to Wikepedia by 1921 American Safety Razor, the manufacturer of the GEM razors, had produced over 1.8 million razors.  By any measure, single-edged razors were a major player in the market.

And then they just disappeared.  Gone forever.  Sure, American Safety Razor continued to make razor blades of all different types, but just as the dinosaurs were wiped out by a cataclysmic asteroid, it seems that the GEM line of single-edged razors simply disappeared off the face of the planet overnight.

I have not been able to find out what caused the extinction.  I know that the GEM Contour II was manufactured through the 1970s but by then it was a minor player, barely surviving.  Was it simply that the mild Gillette safety razors of the 1950s were a better product for the times?  Or, did Gillette market their products better?  Or maybe American Safety Razor was a poorly managed company and was responsible for their own demise?

I own a wide variety of both modern and vintage razors.  I find the GEM single-edged razors every bit as good as their double edged counterparts.  So, What Caused the Demise of the GEM Safety Razors?

single blade rigidness

Is there a difference in the Feather single blade or the Kai single blade or even the Gem with regards to making a SE razor more aggressive or more efficient? I would not think so as they are longer than the standard DE. Still learning, still experimenting.
Thanks

ATT SE1 - First Shave

I am old(er) and my beard is grisly gray and feels like 40 grit sandpaper.  I have been shaving forever, or so it seems.  I started in 1969 with a safety razor (don't remember the type), wilkinson sword blades and Noxzema brushless shaving cream.  I soon switched to carts and then the horrible BIC disposables, but I was a college student then.  What did I know?   In time I settled into the world of carts and shaving GEL. Those were the dark years of lousy, expensive shaves.  5 years ago I rediscovered wetshaving and it has been a fun ride through memory lane and great shaves.

I have a fairly large collection of vintage GEM razors which I enjoy.  My favorite daily ride is the Bullet or the Clog Pruf.  The MMOC is a little too aggressive for daily use.  I also own a variety of vintage safety razors with my favorite being the Gillette New Open Comb.  Over the years I have owned most of the ATT line at one time or another.  The one in my cupboard at this time is the ATT S2 open comb slant mated to a kronos handle.

There is nothing quite like trying out a new razor.  In the case of the SE1, it is also my first try with a modern SE razor mated to a shavette blade.  My very first thought was that the shavette blade is really wide.  I wondered if I would be able to control it.  (Turned out not to be an issue.)  I screwed the ATT Kronos handle onto the SE1 and I was not happy.  Visually, it seemed off to me with too wide a head for a skinny, short handle; and the razor seemed head heavy as well.  I pulled out an Apollo handle (97mm; 100gm) that had been sitting in a drawer for several years because it always seemed too long and too heavy for a standard safety razor head.  The SE1 not only looked right with the longer and wider Apollo handle, but the balance was better as well.  The combo is beastly heavy but felt right in my hand.  Loading a Kai Captain Titan Mild into the razor was a snap.

I went through my usual prep and lathered with my favorite TTFFC soap, Get In Lime.  I started at my usual spot, the right temple, carefully set my shave angle and reminded myself to tread lightly.  (More than once an aggressive razor has taught me a lesson about proper technique.)  The first stoke was smooth and easy.  Really smooth and really easy.  Shave angle was intuitive and, unlike some aggressive razors, I could apply a touch of pressure without worry.  The shave was very efficient and the razor, despite the wide head, was agile and able to get into all of the nooks and crannies on my face.  I am a two pass kind of guy with a WTG pass followed by a XTG pass.  When re-applying the shaving cream for the second pass, I could feel that that SE1 had done a great job on the first pass.  Very impressive first shave.

Stan, the man behind ATT razors,  once described the ATT SE1 as shaving like a H but feeling like an M.  I think that is a very good description.  The razor felt smooth like a mild razor, but the results were far more efficient in line with a more aggressive razor.  For those of you who are familiar with the ATT S2, I would say that the SE1 is a smoother operator.

I think this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Cheers

Cobra Classic/King Cobra Razors Are Back-Not Exactly

Just got an email that both these SE razors are available for sale. Here is the catch. The are both on pre-order and not available until June. In addition the Cobra Classic now costs $220 (blades not included). The King Cobra is priced at $260 (blades not included). Personally I don't pre-order (pay in advance). That is a rip off IMHO. I did it once but never again. The razors look the same nothing has changed as far as I can tell.

The wonderful British Everready Streamline SE razor

This post is about the wonderful British Everready Streamline SE razor. I have been using this razor for many years in my rotation. Many razors have come and gone but the Streamline (and the 1934 Aristocrat) have maintained their place. About a year ago I changed the handle to the Stork TI Aristocrat 2 (90 x 13) and but did this handle change the balance and mobility of the head. This handle created a whole different razor. Before I used the razor once or twice a month now I have doubled that. I know not everyone likes the Gem blade because it's a stiff blade , but in the right razor it sings.

Below are a few photos of this wonderful razor with the Stork

Colonial vs RR Hawk vs El Jefe

I've been testing these 3 razors for almost three weeks. My cream (Vitos) and blade (FAC Pro) have remained constant, while I switched handles frequently. Cold water face lathering with a Semogue OC. 5 shaves per blade, per razor.

The pictures tell a good tale of quality and finish, but my face is the final judge. Verdict at the end.

FINISH: Excellent on all 3, even though 2 were supposed to be "blems". Smooth threading.

FIT: Excellent on C and R; no movement with proper alignment every time. However, E was sloppy. Sloppy like a freshman at a prom dance. 2-3 nicks, cuts, or weepers with every shave. No amount of alignment adjustment, no amount of youtube DIY watching could help. E was an evil bitch, never to touch my face again.

THOUGHTS: They are wider than a DE but that does not retract from the shave. They glide smoothly and with a sharp purpose. After the initial shave, I was able to get a BBS shave with 2 passes. Each blade was used 5 times. My only issue was with E, that cantankerous slut.

Comparing aggressiveness - how does it compare to mongoose and king cobra?? After spending time with both I realized that One is too heavy and the other one is too aggressive. So now I'm looking for something that has the slim head of cobra but is mild

Would this cleaning method be bad for razors

I change my sonicare heads every 6 months. If I saved the old head and used it to clean my razors after use with the old heads, would it harm the finish on razors? I ask this because I read before that putting razors in sonic jewellery cleaners could harm finishes. So I was wondering about sonic toothbrushes form regular cleaning

Angle of shave with injectors

Hello everyone,

My new fascination is schick injectors. I have been getting flawless DFS and even BBS while flying through my shaves. All angles, steep and shallow, work for removing my whiskers. My question to the fellow shavenookers is, what angle do you use while shaving with your injectors?

When taking long and fast strokes with my injectors, I feel a steep angle works best. The steep angle does not work while shaving at a normal pace, I have to speed up my strokes to get the results that I'm after.

Shave responsibly,
Weston

Purchased a sample pack from Try-a-Blade. Some good, some ok.

Because they are not marked, like DE are, and I'm too lazy to log them....please just tell me what you find the smoothest...I know...MMMV...

Thanks.

Any Reason to Try the Feather Pro?

I am a veteran shaver.  Over the last few years I have gradually moved from DE to GEM and now to my new favorite, the ATT SE1.  My beard is old and grisly (as is the person behind the beard).

I started with the Captain Kai Mild and I found it to be a very good blade for the SE1.  A routine shave for me is a two pass with the second pass XTG.  I would call the SE1/Kai Mild combination a moderately aggressive razor.  Very efficient, if not very aggressive.  Never have to worry about a mortal injury to my jugular vein.

For fun I purchased a sleeve of  Feather ProGuard blades.  I expected them to be more aggressive than the Kai.  After a reasonable trial, I have mixed feelings about the ProGuard.  They may be slightly more aggressive than the Kai (maybe not), but more importantly, I found the ProGuard to have a rougher quality about them.  Not bad, and if I had never used the Kai I might not even have noticed, but I definitely prefer the face feel of the Kai to the ProGuard.

Given how I feel about the ProGuard, is there any reason to trial the Feather Pros?  I know they are more aggressive than the Guard blades,  but are they also smoother?

Cheers
